The Hope College ice hockey team is still unbeaten.
The Flying Dutchmen completed a weekend home-and-home series with Michigan State University, picking up two shutout wins, 4-0 and 7-0.
Friday's game was propelled by three powerplay goals for the Flying Dutchmen. Senior Max Mones (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central HS), and juniors Gabe Gunneson (Rockford, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) and Kevin Healy (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford), pictured, sent in the extra man goals.
Gunneson would be credited for the fourth and only even play goal during the first game of the weekend. Freshman Maclane Schick of Kohler, Wisconsin (Kohler) stopped all 15 shots on net for his first shutout of the season, and of his career.
Saturday's game brought on a second shutout for Schick who was in net for the away game against the Spartans stopping all 16 shots in game two. Schick, the goaltender, also grabbed two assists in the 7-0 win.
Lucas Barber, the junior Lake Orion, Michigan (Lake Orion) would tally the game-winning and first goal of the game. Other goal scorers for the orange and blue in the big win were Bradley Baysore (1g, 2a), Ashton Bol (1g, 1a), Luke Mckinch, Nolan Convertini, Hogan Wierda and Gunneson.
Junior Mason Weiss (Flushing, Michigan / Michigan Connections Academy) collected four assists in the two wins to help the Flying Dutchmen get to 12-0 on the season. Over the two games, a total of 117 shots were sent on the Michigan State goaltender. The Spartans fell to 5-8 on the season.
The Flying Dutchmen are back in action at home on Friday, November 19 at Griff's Icehouse West as they take on Calvin University at 7:30 p.m.. Saturday, November 20 will be a rematch with Calvin at Eagles Ice Arena with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
