Historic Moments and Notable Performances
Kenedy Schoonveld, Women's Basketball senior guard and social work major, was chosen as the fourth Hope College recipient of the MIAA's Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Female Scholar-Athlete Award.
Women's Basketball finished undefeated and No. 1 in Division III for the second consecutive season. The Flying Dutch went 16-0 as they claimed MIAA regular-season and tournament titles. There was no NCAA Division III Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hope extended its winning streak to a school-record 45 games — the eighth-longest streak in Division III women's basketball history.
Men's Track and Field's Nick Hoffman recorded the highest men's 1,500-meter finish at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with a third-place effort of 3 minutes, 47.74 seconds in Greensboro, N.C. The junior was Hope's fourth All-American in the event. During the indoor season, Hoffman finished runner-up in the 3,000 meters at the Division III Elite Indoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa, which were held after the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled. Hoffman became the first men's track and field athlete to be selected as MIAA Most Valuable Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete in the same year.
Women's Track and Field's Ana Tucker posted the highest women's 5,000-meter finish with a fourth-place effort at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Greensboro. N.C. The sophomore was Hope's second All-American in the event. During the indoor season, Tucker won the women's 3,000-meters at the Elite Indoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa, which were held after the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled. Tucker clocked the fastest Division III indoor 3,000-meter time of the season at 9:39.72 that also set a Wartburg College facility record.
Baseball's Stu Fritz reached the 600-win coaching milestone in thrilling fashion with a 6-4, extra-inning victory against Albion College on May 7 at Boeve Stadium. A two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the eighth inning from freshman Robbie Stuursma secured the victory. All of Fritz's wins have come at Hope College.
Women's Tennis added to its MIAA records with its sixth consecutive MIAA regular-season championship and ninth consecutive MIAA Tournament title.
Eleven of the MIAA's Most Valuable Athletes were from Hope: Grace Behrens (outdoor track), Jacob Burkett (men's tennis), Ty Dalton (men's soccer), Nick Hoffman (indoor and outdoor track), Sydney Jackson (women's tennis), Jack Radzville (men's lacrosse, offense), Emma Schaefer (women's swimming), Kenedy Schoonveld (women's basketball), Ana Tucker (indoor track), and Kamaron Wilcox (co-diving).
Two student-athletes were awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships: senior swimmer Hope Reynolds and cross country/track and field's Chelsea Miskelley '20.
FALL
Men's and Women's Cross Country
The Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch's fall seasons were canceled. Both teams earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for the 2020-21 school year.
Football
The Flying Dutchmen's fall season was postponed. They did not participate in spring MIAA play after choosing instead to prepare for the Fall 2021 season through practices. Junior offensive tackle Brady Eding was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Football team.
Men's Golf
The Flying Dutchmen tied for second place in the MIAA standings, totaling a score of 1,824 strokes over six league jamborees for an average of 304.0. The jamboree season was played in the spring instead of the fall and served as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Freshman Will Robson finished fifth in the MIAA individual standings with a 74.33 average and earned All-MIAA First team honors. Robson also was named to the Division III PING All-Region Teams. Sophomore Jack Crawford made the All-MIAA Second Team.
Women's Golf
The Flying Dutch finished runner-up in the MIAA standings, shooting a score of 1,824 over five league jamboree for an average of 325.6. The jamboree season was played in the spring instead of the fall and served as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Senior Abigail Meder tied for second place in the individual standings with a 79.6 average and earned All-MIAA First Team honors along with junior Megan Jenkinson (81.2, sixth). Meder also received the MIAA's sportsmanship award. Senior Jordyn Rioux and sophomore Grace VanDellen each made the All-MIAA Second Team.
Men's Soccer
The Flying Dutchmen won the MIAA Tournament for the third time in team history and finished the spring season with a 5-1-1 overall record. In the championship game, Hope defeated Trine University, 2-1, in overtime, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Senior Ty Dalton scored his first goal of the season 5 minutes, 33 seconds into OT off a rebound. Dalton became the ninth different member of the Flying Dutchmen to be named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by two teammates: junior midfielder Ryan Flynn and freshman defender Brandon Fles. Two more teammates made the All-MIAA Second Team: senior defender Dominick Byrne and sophomore defender Jackson Strabel. Flynn was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams.
Women's Soccer
The Flying Dutch finished the spring season with a 4-2-1 overall record after reaching the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed. Freshman defender Jenna Mustapha claimed All-MIAA First Team honors. Four teammates made the All-MIAA Second Team: sophomore defender Sammi Blair, freshman forward Natalie Hammer, junior forward Sarah Mikesell, and senior midfielder Audrey White.
Volleyball
The Flying Dutch finished ninth in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll after posting a 9-1 record during the spring season and winning the MIAA Tournament. In the championship game, Hope won at Calvin University in four sets (16-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-16) behind 18 kills from junior outside hitter Ana Grunewald, nine blocks from sophomore middle hitter Charlotte Brecht, and 26 digs from freshman libero Maggie Wehrmeyer. Grunewald and junior middle hitter McKenna Otto each repeated as All-MIAA First team selections; it was Otto's third selection and Grunewald's second. Brecht and Wehrmeyer both made the All-MIAA Second Team. Wehrmeyer also was selected as the MIAA Freshman of the year. Otto and senior setter Adair Cutler both were voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams.
WINTER
Men's Basketball
The Flying Dutchmen finished the season with a 7-5 overall record after advancing to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament. Senior forward Preston Granger received D3hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Second Team honors. He was also an All-MIAA First Team selection. Junior guard Tyler George made the All-MIAA Second Team. The Flying Dutchmen won the only Rivalry game of the season, defeating the Knights on the road, 79-77, after Granger sank two free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining in regulation. Sophomore forward Evan Thomas was voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams.
Women's Basketball
The Flying Dutch completed a second consecutive season undefeated, 16-0, and ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III. They extended their winning streak to a school-record 45 games which is also the eighth-longest streak in Division III history. Hope capped its perfect season with its third victory of the season against nationally-ranked Trine University, 64-54, at DeVos Fieldhouse in the championship game of the MIAA Tournament. The Flying Dutch set MIAA Tournament records by allowing only 26 points against Calvin University in the semifinals and scoring 115 points in the quarterfinals against Kalamazoo College. Senior guard Kenedy Schoonveld and senior forward Olivia Voskuil both were selected to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-America Teams. Schoonveld also was chosen as a D3hoops.com Second Team All-American and the D3hoops Co-Great Lakes Region Player of the Year. Head coach Brian Morehouse was named the U.S. Marines Corps/WBCA Division III Coach of the Year and D3hoops Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. Schoonveld claimed her second MIAA Most Valuable Player honor and her fourth All-MIAA First Team honor. Voskuil and senior guard Sydney Muller also made the All-MIAA First Team. Voskuil received the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive time. Schoonveld and Voskuil both were voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District Teams.
Men's Swimming and Diving
The Flying Dutchmen were runner-up at the MIAA Championships for their highest finish in seven years, totaling 906 points over the two-day meet at Calvin University. At the league meet, sophomore Bailey Smith set MIAA and Hope records in the 1,650-yard freestyle by clocking a time of 15 minutes, 40.4 seconds. Smith also broke Kirk Assink's 26-year-old Hope record in the 500 freestyle with a second-place swim of 4:42.27. It was Hope's oldest record. Two Flying Dutchmen surpassed the MIAA 200 butterfly record: freshman Conor East (1:49.40, first) and sophomore Jake Peterson (1:49.82, second). Catton set a Hope 100 butterfly record with a 48.37 swim during preliminaries. Junior Kamaron Wilcox shared MIAA Most Valuable Men's Diver honors after repeating as league champion on the 3-meter board. It was his second consecutive MIAA Most Valuable Diver award. Wilcox was joined on the All-MIAA Team by six teammates: Catton, East, sophomore Theo Duong, East, Muller, Peterson, and Smith. Seven Flying Dutchmen earned CSCAA All-America distinction: Catton, East, Muller, Smith, freshman diver Ewan Tiongson, sophomore swimmer Jackson Uyl, and Wilcox (first team), and Peterson (second team). The Flying Dutchmen also received CSCAA Scholar All-America honors as a team.
Women's Swimming and Diving
The Flying Dutch captured their 23rd MIAA championship overall and second in three years by winning the two-day league meet with a total of 961.5 points at Calvin University. Senior Emma Schaefer claimed league titles in three events en route to her second MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer honor. Schaefer broke Betsy Vandenberg's 21-year-old school record in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.55). She also set a new mark in the 200 individual medley (2:04.92) en route to her third consecutive league title in the event. Freshman Madeline Tessin established a new Hope record in the 50 freestyle (23.60). Schaefer and Tessin were joined on the All-MIAA Team by six teammates: junior Aubrey East, freshman Jess Estabrook, freshman Rachel Gamm, freshman Maddy O'Donnell, and freshman Delaney Wesolek, and freshman Cameron Hamilton. Two Hope swimmers earned CSCAA All-America distinction: Schaefer and Tessin. The Flying Dutch also received CSCAA Scholar All-America honors as a team.
Men's Indoor Track and Field
Junior Nick Hoffman set a Hope record in the 1-mile run by recording a runner-up effort of 4 minutes, 12.38 seconds at the Division III Elite Indoor Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Hoffman also took third in the 3,000 meters at the invite-only, non-scoring meet, which was held after the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled. The Flying Dutchmen tied for second at the MIAA Indoor Championships with a score of 101 points. Hoffman became Hope's first indoor league champion in the 3,000 meters and the 1-mile run. He was selected as the MIAA's Most Valuable Indoor Track Athlete and made the All-MIAA Team. Hoffman set school records in the 3,000 meters at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet on February 13 (8:31.93) and in the 1-mile run at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open on January 23 (4:12.57).
Women's Indoor Track and Field
The Flying Dutch won two events at the season-ending Division III Elite Indoor Championships, including a school-record and facility-record 3,000-meter performance from sophomore Ana Tucker. The invite-only, non-scoring meet, which was held after the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled. Tucker's time of 9 minutes, 39.72 seconds at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, was the fastest time in the nation for the season. Tucker was part of the winning distance medley relay, along with senior Jacinda Cole, sophomore Grace Behrens, and sophomore Samantha Schermerhorn. The Flying Dutch repeated as MIAA indoor champions and claimed their third league title all-time. Tucker, the MIAA's Most Valuable Track Athlete, shattered MIAA and Hope records in the 3,000 meters (9:58.70) and the 1-mile (4:57.92). She also set the 5,000-meter Hope record (17:11.98) at the GVSU Big Meet. Tucker was joined on the All-MIAA Team by eight teammates: the MIAA champion 4x400 relay team of sophomore Claire Benedict, senior Hannah Kenny, senior Jacinda Cole and Behrens, and the MIAA champion distance medley relay team of freshman Rebecca Markham, Schermerhorn, freshman Jessie Schamanek, and sophomore Anna Mason.
SPRING
Baseball
The Flying Dutchmen finished with a 25-15 overall record and were runner-ups in the MIAA regular season standings and the league tournament. Center fielder Evan Maday received all-region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association. Teammate and fellow outfielder Spencer Cable joined Maday on the All-MIAA First Team. Outfielder Kainan Bayn made the All-MIAA Second Team. Maday set Hope's career- and single-season stolen base records with 80 and 34 steals, respectively. On May 7, Hope defeated Albion College and helped head coach Stu Fritz reach the 600-win milestone. In Game 1 of a doubleheader that the Flying Dutchmen swept against the Britons, freshman Robbie Stuursma slugged a two-out, two-run walk-off home run for a 6-4, extra-inning victory for Fritz to record win No. 600.
Men's Lacrosse
The Flying Dutchmen advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament second round for the first time in team history and finished with a 13-2 overall record. Hope defeated Benedictine University (Illinois), 22-17, on May 14 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois for its first NCAA postseason victory. The Flying Dutchmen lost to the host Titans, 18-14, in the second round. Hope reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time by defeating regular-season champ Albion College in the MIAA Tournament final, 19-13, at Albion. Junior attacker Jack Radzville received honorable-mention All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The MIAA Offensive MVP became the first member of the Flying Dutchmen to reach the 100-point mark in a single season. Radzville was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by six teammates: senior attacker Luke Elder, junior midfielder Zach Wiggins, junior face-off specialist Cole Scheffler, junior long pole Brayden Blackburn, junior short pole Liam Cunningham, and junior defender Andrew Conlon. Junior defender Tucker Martinez and freshman attacker Michael Mann made the All-MIAA Second Team. Elder, whose 63 goals were one off the school record, was named a USILA Scholar All-American.
Women's Lacrosse
The Flying Dutch tied the school record for wins in a season after finishing 11-3. Hope lost in the championship game of the MIAA Tournament at top-seeded Saint Mary's College, 14-13. The Flying Dutch set a team postseason record with 20 goals during a quarterfinal victory against Trine University. Hope put three on the All-MIAA First Team: senior attacker Rachel Elder, senior defender Caroline Milholland, and senior midfielder Paige Wilmer. Senior midfielder Madison Micho made the All-MIAA Second Team.
Softball
The Flying Dutch finished with a 25-11 overall record and were MIAA co-champions with a 14-2 league record. On May 1, Hope swept first-place Trine University, 7-6 and 6-5, at Wolters Stadium on the final day of the regular season to claim its sixth MIAA title. In Game 2, junior second baseman Arinn King gave the Flying Dutch the lead for good with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Reliever Alaina Adams claimed the win in relief with 4 ⅓ innings of one-run relief. In Game 1, King singled home Peyton Benjamin, who led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, with the winning run. The Flying Dutch placed three on the All-MIAA First Team: senior pitcher Megan Soderbloom, junior first baseman Kaelin Callow, and junior pitcher Avery Slancik. King and senior outfielder Jo Cook made the All-MIAA Second Team.
Men's Tennis
The Flying Dutchmen finished with a 7-8 overall record and were runner-up in the MIAA regular-season standings and the league tournament. Sophomore Jacob Burkett claimed MIAA Most Valuable Player honors after going 7-0 in singles matches and 5-1 in doubles matches against league opponents. He became Hope's first MIAA MVP since head coach Bob Cawood earned the honor in 2013. Burkett was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by sophomore Cameron Coates.
Women's Tennis
The Flying Dutch continued their record-setting dominance in the MIAA, returned to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and finished with a 12-3 overall record. Hope won the MIAA Tournament for a league-record ninth consecutive time with a 5-3 victory vs. Kalamazoo College in the May 5 final at VandePoel-Heeringa Stadium Courts. The Flying Dutch captured the regular-season MIAA title for a league-record sixth consecutive team with a 7-0 record. After receiving a first-round bye to the NCAA Tournament, Hope was edged in the second round by Linfield University (Oregon) in Atlanta, Georgia. Junior Sydney Jackson became the fourth consecutive member of the Flying Dutch, and 18th overall, to be voted as the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by senior teammate and doubles partner Leah Newhof. Senior Bailey Chorney was named the recipient of the MIAA's Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award. Chorney and junior Saydee Johns made the All-MIAA Second Team.
Men's Outdoor Track and Field
The Flying Dutchmen claimed NCAA Division III All-America honors in one event and finished runner-up at the MIAA Outdoor Championships. Junior Nick Hoffman became the fourth member of the Flying Dutchmen to claim All-America honors in the 1,500 meters with a third-place time of 3 minutes, 47.74 seconds on May 30 at the NCAA Championships at Irwin Belk Track Complex in Greensboro, N.C. The finish was the highest in the event in Hope history. Hoffman and freshman steeplechaser Dan Campbell were named to the USTFCCCA all-region teams. Hoffman swept the MIAA's Men's Most Valuable Track Athlete honors as the outdoor and indoor recipient. He earned All-MIAA honors by winning the 800 and 1,500 meters. MIAA javelin champion Chris Stamatopoulos also made the All-MIAA Team.
Women's Outdoor Track and Field
The Flying Dutch claimed NCAA Division III All-America honors in one event and earned its sixth MIAA Outdoor Championship. Sophomore Ana Tucker became Hope's second All-American in the 5,000 meters after a fourth-place finish at the national championships at Irwin Belk Track Complex in Greensboro, N.C. The finish was the highest in the event in Hope history. The Flying Dutch had three qualifiers to nationals: Tucker, senior Jacinda Cole and senior Hannah Kenny. Tucker was named the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Track Athlete of the Year. She was joined in receiving all-region honors by two teammates: Cole and Kenny. The Flying Dutch won the MIAA Championships with 234 points on May 6-7 at Alma College. Sophomore Grace Behrens became Hope's ninth MIAA Outdoor Most Valuable Track Athlete. She was joined by seven teammates who earned All-MIAA recognition with first-place performances at the MIAA Championships: sophomore Helen Dodge, freshman Kimmie Drake, Kenny, sophomore Amanda Lines, junior Hayley Scollard, sophomore Julie Timperman, and Tucker. Tucker set a Hope record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:37.99 at the Hillsdale College GINA Relays.
