Dr. Daryl Siedentop '60, a championship-winning Hope College head coach who became a distinguished scholar, educator, and promoter of high-quality physical education for children, will be remembered next month at a memorial service in Columbus, Ohio.
Siedentop passed away on July 15. He was 82.

After honor-laden basketball and baseball careers at Hope, Siedentop returned to teach and coach at his alma mater for 10 years. He served as the head baseball coach for eight seasons and guided the Flying Dutchmen to four MIAA titles during his tenure. He also earned his master's degree from Western Michigan University and his doctorate in physical education from Indiana University during this time.
In 1970, Siedentop joined the faculty in the College of Education at The Ohio State University where he spent the rest of his professional career. He was a well-respected member in physical education-teacher education. He held various administrative roles at Ohio State, including senior associate dean and interim dean.
After retiring in 2001, Siedentop assumed initial leadership of OSU's new P-12 Project, a university-wide outreach initiative to support urban school improvement in Ohio. In 2005, he accepted an appointment as research professor and director for the Teacher Quality Partnership, a consortium of Ohio's 50 colleges and universities designed to enhance teacher quality and ensure highly qualified teachers in every classroom.
Siedentop was a prolific author as well, publishing 12 books, including several that have been translated into Japanese, Korean, French, and Spanish. He served as co-editor for six research monographs and published more than 80 refereed articles in well-known, scholarly journals, and was a keynote speaker at numerous professional conferences.
Siedentop received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the 1984 International Olympic Committee President's Award (Samaranch Award), which is the highest honor for work in sport pedagogy.

In 1990, Siedentop received the distinguished alumni honor from Hope College. In 2006, he was inducted into the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Hall of Fame. In 2011, Hope presented honorary degrees to Daryl Siedentop and his brother, Sir Larry Siedentop.
Daryl Siedentop is survived by his wife, Bobbie; his brother, Sir Larry Siedentop, of England; Martha Holloway (Jim Kline), Tim Holloway (Cathy Kane-Holloway), Ron Hutchison; nieces and nephews Timmy, Casey and Caitlin Holloway, and Laura Hutchison.
