Football Places Runner-Up in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll

The Hope College football team is projected to contend for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship this fall.

The Flying Dutchmen finished runner-up in the 2021 fall MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll with one first-place vote and 14 points.

The preseason poll for MIAA football awards one point for a first-place vote, two points for a second-place vote, et cetera.  Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own programs.

Albion College topped the poll with six first-place votes and six points. After Hope, Trine University took third with 17 points and was followed by Olivet College (20), Adrian College (23), Alma College (31), and Kalamazoo College (36).

The 111th season for the Flying Dutchmen kicked off this week with fall camp. The season opener is Friday, September 3 against Anderson University (Indiana) at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

This is Hope's 89th MIAA season; the Flying Dutchmen's first MIAA season was in 1927. Hope has claimed 21 MIAA championships.

Head coach Peter Stuursma '93 is in his sixth season at Hope. During his tenure, Stuursma has led the Flying Dutchmen to a 32-9 overall record, including a 23-3 mark against MIAA opponents.
