Each fall, the Hope College and Calvin University women's golf teams compete against each other in a dual match, and when they do, they depart from regular stroke-play format.
Instead, the Flying Dutch and the Knights vie in match play. It's a little used collegiate format that head coach Greg Stafford appreciates for its change of pace. He also values the event as it honors the memory of his late wife, Joan Stafford.
And with a 7 ½ point to 2 ½ win point in the duel on Saturday, the Flying Dutch honored Joan's memory well. Hope has now been victorious in every golf event they've played in the fall of 2021.
In the #1 match, Hope senior Megan Jenkinson lost to Calvin's Chandler Sjoerdsma, 5-4.
At #2, Hope senior Megan Radaz and Calvin's Emma Dykhouse finished all square.
At #3, Hope sophomore Emlin Munch topped Calvin's Kaylee Hirschman, 2-1.
At #4, Hope junior Grace VanDellen was victorious over Calvin's Jericha Sharphorn, 3-2.
At #5, Hope sophomore Abby Fansler was downed by Calvin's Georgie Scholtens, 1 up.
At #6, Hope junior Rita Cheney defeated Calvin's Brandi Statema, 7-5.
At #7, Hope freshman Lauren Sass won, 8-6, over Calvin's Katherine Lamer.
At #8, Hope sophomore Abby Derocher topped Calvin's Anna Johnson, 8-6.
At #9, Hope senior Lexi Miller downed Calvin's Audrey Howard, 8-6.
At #10, Hope freshman Sarah Owens defeated Calvin's Lizzy Wichers, 9-7.
The Flying Dutch return to stroke-play action in the second MIAA Jamboree of the fall season on Saturday, Sept. 25 at Milham Park Golf Course in Kalamazoo. Tee time is 1 p.m.
