Men's Soccer Beats Kalamazoo on a Late Penalty Kick

On a rainy night at an already tough place to play, the Hope College men's soccer team rose to the challenge.

The Flying Dutchmen earned a 2-1 victory at Kalamazoo College on Tuesday after sophomore Mario Hrvojevic scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 6 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in regulation.

Hope raised its record to 4-3-5 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. The Flying Dutchmen moved into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

"I'm extremely proud of the guys for not giving up," Head coach David Blahnik said. " They showed a lot of fight tonight."

Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy) snapped a 1-1 tie after burying his penalty kick into the lower right corner of the goal.

It was Hrvojevic's second goal of the season.

"Seth Walters created some movement in the box, and we were able to get a penalty kick out of it," Blahnik said. "When we're moving the ball, we're able to create opportunities like that."

Kalamazoo (3-6-5, 0-1-2 MIAA) tied the score in the 61st minute on a Chad Ewing goal.

Hope grabbed a 1-0 lead 3:42 before the end of the first half.

Off a corner kick, Hrvojevic fired a ball that senior Kai Francisco (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing) kicked into the net for his second goal of the season.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame being outshot, 22-10.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keegan DeKuiper (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores) recorded six saves for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m. against Olivet College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The game is part of a Purple Community doubleheader that is benefitting Van Andel Institute's biomedical research and science education efforts and helping underwrite an internship for a Hope student at Van Andel Institute. At noon, the Hope women's soccer team kicks off against Albion College.
