Women's Soccer Erupts for Four Second-Half Goals, Tops Alma

The Hope College women's soccer team answered a second-half defensive lapse against Alma College swiftly and decisively.

The Flying Dutch charged to a 5-1 victory on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium by  ripping four goals in a span of 16 minutes after the Scots drew even.

The outburst between the 56th and 72nd minutes featured goals from junior Madison Holloway, junior Natalie Hammer, senior Emma Dutmers and freshman Hayley Flynn.

Hope held a 1-0 lead for 38 minutes after freshman Olivia Dieppa (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) blasted a shot under the crossbar for her first goal of the season in the 18th minute.

Alma (2-5-2, 1-3 MIAA) tied the score 10 minutes into the second half after Paige Moore pounced on keeper Parker Hutchinson's mishandling of a ball at the top of box for her third goal of the season.

Holloway (Macatawa, Michigan / Holland Christian) didn't wait long to answer. Thirty-two seconds after Moore scored, the junior rifled a left-footed, angled shot from about 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the net.

"It was enormous," head coach Leigh Sears said of the game-winning goal 10:25 into the second half. "It was like a prizefight. They took a big hit and said 'Let's get after it.' We knew when we got the second one the lid would fall off."

Five minutes later, Hammer (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) beat the Alma keeper for her fifth goal of the season.

Four minutes after, senior Emma Dutmers (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) buried a rebound off a Holloway shot for her sixth goal of the season.

In the 72nd minute, freshman Hayley Flynn (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey kicked in a cross from freshman Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston) for her fourth goal of the season.

Hope improved to 7-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in MIAA play.

The MIAA tightened a bit after first-place Calvin University's 12-game winning streak was halted by a 0-0 tie at Adrian College. Calvin (12-0-1, 4-0-1 MIAA) hosts Trine University (8-3-2, 3-0-1 MIAA) on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.

The Flying Dutch hosts Albion College (6-2-3, 3-1 MIAA) on Saturday at noon. It is a part of a Purple Community Soccer Doubleheader benefitting Van Andel Institute.
