Women's Soccer Falls to Albion in Purple Community Day Thriller

The Hope College women's soccer team was edged by Albion College, 2-1, on Saturday on Purple Community day at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Proceeds from the Purple Community women's and men's soccer doubleheader benefit Van Andel Institute's biomedical research and science education and help underwrite an internship for a Hope student at Van Andel Institute.

The Flying Dutch fell to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in MIAA play.

Albion (7-2-3, 4-1 MIAA) scored the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute. The Britons' Quinn Natschke found room in the box to boot in Megan Loney's corner kick and snapped a 1-1 tie.

Hope evened the score seven minutes earlier off a free kick. Freshman Hayley Flynn (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey) emerged from a scrum in the goal area to put her foot on the long free kick from junior Jenna Mustapha (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) that came from in front of the Hope bench.

Albion held a 1-0 lead for 50 minutes. Loney beat Hope goalie Parker Hutchinson (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) to a loose ball at the top of the penalty area.

The Flying Dutch outshot Albion by a 21-9 margin.

Hutchinson made three saves for Hope. Albion goalkeeper Becca Ross recorded six saves.

The Flying Dutch's next game is Saturday, Oct. 22, at Olivet College. Kickoff is at noon.
