Women's Soccer Tops Olivet, Remains in Hunt for MIAA Tournament Bye

Kealeigh Usiak took a flier on a shot from about 30 yards out and placed the soccer ball perfectly for Hope College.

The senior defender from Dimondale, Michigan (Lansing Christian HS) buried a long key from well outside the top of the penalty box into the top right corner of the goal at Olivet College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutch went on to earn a 1-0 victory and move into a two-tie way for third place in the MIAA standings with Albion College. 

With 4-2-1 league records and 13 points, Hope and Albion trail second-place Trine University (4-1-2 MIAA) by one point with one regular-season remaining. Calvin University has clinched the regular-season title with a 6-0-1 league record.

The Flying Dutch host Saint Mary's College, on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Also on Wednesday, Albion plays at Calvin, while Trine hosts Olivet.

The six-team MIAA Tournament kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 29. The top two teams receive first-round byes.

Usiak's unassisted goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half was her second of the season and her career.

Hope (8-4-2 overall) dominated play, outshooting the Comets 26-3 and claiming an 11-0 edge in shots on goal.

The Flying Dutch also recorded 10 corner kicks to Olivet's two.

The shutout was Hope's fifth of the season. Olivet fell to 3-9-1 overall and 1-6 in MIAA play.
