Men's Soccer Scores Off Two Corner Kicks, Beats Adrian

The Hope College men's soccer team set itself up for success with diligent work in practice the past week.

The Flying Dutchmen kicked off MIAA play with a 2-0 victory at Adrian College on Wednesday by scoring twice in the first half off set pieces.

Hope (3-2-5 overall) turned a pair of corner kicks into goals 11 ½ minutes apart against the Bulldogs.

Head coach David Blahnik said the Flying Dutchmen have been focused recently on sharpening their skills on set pieces.

"We've had a lot of corner kicks but were struggling to put the ball in or get shots going," Blahnik said. "The guys have put in a lot of work. It was good to see that pay off."

Sophomore Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy) opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

Hrvojevic headed the ball into the right corner of the Adrian goal thanks to a centering pass from junior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) that was set up by a corner kick from senior Nic Kubert (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Avondale).

It was Hrvojevic's first career goal for the Flying Dutchmen.

In the 33rd minute, Jansen became the goalscorer by heading a corner kick from Kubert into the lower left corner of the goal.

It was Jansen's second goal of the season and his fifth career goal.

Hope dominated Adrian (1-11, 0-1 MIAA), outshooting the Bulldogs by a 25-1 margin, including 14 on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keegan DeKuiper (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores) was credited with one save for the Flying Dutchmen. Adrian goalkeeper Dominic Edwards made 12 saves.

Blahnik was pleased to see his team start MIAA play on a winning note. Next up for Hope is a home game on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. against 11th-ranked Calvin University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

"League play is going to be a battle every night regardless of who's playing," Blahnik said. "We are happy to get a win on the road and get ready for Calvin on Saturday."
