Men's Soccer Battles Calvin, Loses 1-0

The Hope College men's soccer team pushed 11th-ranked Calvin University for 90 minutes on Saturday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium before falling, 1-0.

Despite outshooting the Knights, 27-13, and holding a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, the Flying Dutchmen slipped to 1-1 overall and 3-3-5 overall.

Head coach David Blahnik was proud of his team's performance but wasn't interested in moral victories.

"We let them know we're proud of the things they're doing well. The things we are doing well we're doing at a Top 10 level I believe. We just need to start putting the ball away," Blahnik said. "The guys know it. The guys know once we start putting the ball in the back of the net I feel confident we can beat anybody in the country on any given night."

A goal from Calvin (10-1-2, 2-0 MIAA) four minutes and six seconds into the second half was difference.

The Knights' Christopher Schau used a deke to create space at the top of the penalty box, then blistered a shot from 20 yards out past a diving goalkeeper Keegan DeKuiper and into the lower right corner of the net. It was Schau's ninth goal of the season.

"Calvin has one of the best cultures and ways of playing in the country. We respect that," Blahnik said. "We believe if we do what we can do, we can win. I think the stat line shows that. Again, they scored when they needed to score, and we didn't. We hope we get to see Calvin in November."

The Flying Dutchmen, despite missing two starters, kept attacking and ended up outshooting Calvin, 16-7, during the second half. The Knights' goalkeeper, Daniel Wunder, finished with seven second-half saves and 10 for the game.

"Our guys have bought into training. We have great depth," said Blahnik, whose team was missing starting goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein and all-conference midfielder Matt Wimmer due to injury. "We played seven midfielders. With all seven, the play didn't change much. Keegan is an example of one of those guys who shows up every day, works his tail off. When he gets his chance, he's ready."

Hope looks to rebound on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. when the Flying Dutchmen play at Kalamazoo College.
