The Hope College women's soccer team handed unbeaten Calvin University one of its toughest tests of the season.
Unfortunately for the Flying Dutch, the Knights converted a first-half set piece into a goal and held on for a 1-0 victory on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
After the Senior Day loss, Hope fell to 6-3-2Â overall and 2-1-1 in MIAA play. Ninth-ranked Calvin improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in MIAA games.
The Flying Dutch out-shot the Knights by a 9-8 margin, including 7-4 during the second half.
"I think we played a much better second half," head coach Leigh Sears said. "We're young. We're consistent. We didn't complete passes well. We made some poor decisions. When we find that consistency, I think we're going to be tough to beat."
Calvin came into the game having beaten 11 opponents by at least two goals and outscoring opponents by a 35-0 margin.
The Knights grabbed the lead 7 minutes, 54 seconds into the game when Lucy Iverson put her right foot on a corner kick from Kaitlyn Van Laare just on top of the goalie box.
Goalkeeper Kalex Dodge shut out Hope by making three saves, all during the second half.
Hope goalkeeper Parker Hutchinson (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern HS) also recorded three saves.
Prior to the game, the Flying Dutch honored six seniors:
Sammi Blair (Byron Center, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern),
Cassidy Broekhuizen (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian),
Emma Decker (Petoskey, Michigan / Petoskey),
Emma Dutmers (Traverse City, Michigan / Central),
Erin Powers (Norton Shores, Michigan / Mona Shores), and
Kealeigh Usiak (Dimondale, Michigan / Lansing Christian).
The Flying Dutch return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. when they host Alma College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
