Twelve Cross Country Runners Claim All-MIAA Recognition

A dozen Hope College cross country runners claimed All-MIAA honors for the 2022 season.

Both the women's and men's teams have six honorees apiece after the Flying Dutch won the women's title for the seventh year in a row and the Flying Dutchmen finished runner-up in the closest men's race in 36 years.

The bevy of All-MIAA honors is a satisfying feat, head coach Mark Northuis said.

"Having 12 members of the men's and women's teams earn All-MIAA as well as us having the Most Valuable Runners of the league for both men and women demonstrates the depth of our teams," Northuis said. "Many of those recipients are new to the team, so this bodes well for the future of Hope College Cross Country."

Hope swept the top MIAA individual honors for the first time in team history: senior Ana Tucker on the women's side and sophomore Connor Vachon on the men's side.

Tucker (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow HS) is the seventh Hope women's runner to be an individual champion. The exercise science major clocked a winning 6K time of 20 minutes, 52.2 seconds at the MIAA Championships that was 42 seconds faster than the nearest runner.

This is Tucker's third All-MIAA honor in cross country.

Vachon (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison) is the Flying Dutchmen's first MIAA champion in 36 years and 14th overall. The computer science and education major recorded a winning 8K time of 24 minutes, 21.2 seconds at the MIAA Championships.

This is Vachon's second All-MIAA recognition.

Tucker was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by senior Ellie Jankowski (Granger, Indiana / Penn). This is the second All-MIAA award for Jankowski, a business and communications major..

Vachon was joined on the All-MIAA First Team by senior Anders Bogard (Mattawan, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian), freshman Carston Cole (Holland, Michigan / West Ottawa) and sophomore Cole Jensen (Montague, Michigan / Montague).

This is the second All-MIAA award for Bogard, a biology major, and the first for Jensen.

Four Flying Dutch made the All-MIAA Second Team: senior Anna Mason (Zeeland, Michigan / Libertas Christian), freshman Madison Stern (Saline, Michigan / Saline), sophomore Maddy Struck (Hainesville, Illinois / Grayslake Central), and senior Heleyna Tucker (Midland, Michigan / Midland).

This is the second All-MIAA honor for Mason, a public accounting major and the first for Struck and Tucker, a mathematics major.

Two Flying Dutchmen earned second-team honors: senior Gabe DeYoung (Saegertown, Pennsylvania / Saegertown) and sophomore Lucas Guidone (Chicago, Illinois / Home School).

This is the second All-MIAA honor for DeYoung, a mathematics major, and the first for Guidone.
