ACHA Hockey Bears Down against Oakland, Wins Twice

The Hope College ice hockey team skated to 5-3 and 3-1 wins against Oakland University this weekend in American Collegiate Hockey Association play.

The Flying Dutchmen improved to 9-1 on the season.

On Friday, Hope took command on the road by stringing together three goals in a span of 2 ½ minutes late for a 3-1 lead. 

Senior left wing Lucas Barber (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion HS), senior center Gabe Gunneson (Rockford, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) and sophomore defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) all scored in that decisive stretch.

Holtrop tops the Flying Dutchmen with 10 goals this season.

The Flying Dutchmen outshot Oakland, 50-21. 

Sophomore goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) made 18 saves for Hope.

On Saturday, the Flying Dutchmen struck for two third-period goals on home ice at Griff's IceHouse West to snap a 1-1 tie.

Oakland evened the score four minutes into the third period, but sophomore defenseman Ian MacDonald (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) answered two minutes later for a 2-1 lead.

Gunneson sealed the win by scoring with 2:23 remaining.

Hope outshot Oakland, 59-23.

Schick made 22 saves.

The Flying Dutchmen skate against Michigan State this weekend. Hope hosts the Spartans on Friday, Nov. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at Griff's IceHouse West and faces MSU on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Suburban Ice Arena in East Lansing.
