In a match that went down to the wire, the Hope College men's tennis team lost to Cornerstone University, 5-4, on Friday.
The Flying Dutchmen won two of the three singles flights that went to five sets.
At No. 1 singles, junior Jacob Burkett (Clarkston, Michigan / Clarkston HS) earned a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 victory against Cornerstone's Andres Jimenez.
At No. 2 singles, junior Cameron Coates (Stevensville, Michigan / Laurel Springs) claimed a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 victory against Cornerstone's Mateo Jimenez.
At No. 6 singles, senior Matt Henkel (Traverse City, Michigan / T.C. Central) recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Cornerstone's Jake Steeman.
In doubles play, Hope earned its points at the third flight where Coates teamed with senior Tyler Koran (Salinas, California / Salinas) for an 8-5 victory against Cornerstone's Daniel Alfaro and Tomas Yacuzio.
Hope is now 1-4 on the season.
The Flying Dutchmen's next match is Friday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. at home against Oberlin College (Ohio).
