Another fended off comeback attempt for the Hope College women's lacrosse team, as they improved to 2-1 in conference play with a 21-11 win over Alma College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch did not trail the entire game, as they had a two goal lead after the first period, an eight goal lead at the half, and a six goal lead heading into the final period.
Alma grabbed four goals to Hope's two in the third period, but could not keep up with the orange and blue's scoring.
Sophomore Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland HS) and senior Madison Micho (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) shared a team-high five goals to lead Hope to their seventh overall victory of the season. Salazar had a team-high 10 shots, while Micho led the Flying Dutch in draw-controls with eleven.
Hope dominated the final period, scoring five of the six goals found. Salazar and freshman Bella Lafranca (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) each had two goals a piece in the final stanza, and senior Sophie Ackerman (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) grabbed a single goal before the end of the game.
Freshman Ruthie Anderson (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell) (2g), senior Madison McCreey (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) (3g), and sophomore Kristen Szost (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison International Academy) (2g, 1a) all contributed to the Flying Dutch victory. Sophomore Maddie Yakes, pictured, (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) faced six shots while in goal for Hope, while freshman Liz Kelley (Brighton, Michigan / Brighton) was in net to stop two of six shots in the win.
