Men’s Soccer Places Third in MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll

The Hope College men's soccer team aims to challenge for an Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship this fall after taking third in the 2022 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Flying Dutchmen totaled 20 points and placed behind first-place Calvin University (seven points and seven first-place votes) and second-place Kalamazoo College (16 points and one first-place vote). Coaches could not vote for their own teams.

Hope finished ahead of Trine University (21 points), Albion College (35), Alma College (38), Olivet College (40) and Adrian College (47).

Led by first-year head coach Dave Blahnik, the Flying Dutchmen went 11-4-3 overall and placed third in the MIAA with a 4-1-2 league record during the 2021 season.

Hope returns three All-MIAA selections from last season, including first-team midfielder Matt Wimmer, a junior from Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Jesuit HS).

The Flying Dutchmen also bring back two All-MIAA Second Team honorees: senior defender and business major Jackson Strabel (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Kentwood) and junior midfielder and mechanical engineering/physics major Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern).

Hope kicks off the 2022 season on Friday-Saturday, September 2-3, with 7 p.m. home games against Hardin Simmons University (Texas) and the University of Redlands (California), respectively.

The Flying Dutchmen's first MIAA game is Wednesday, October 5, at Adrian College.
