Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Alan Babbitt

Emma Post, Volleyball Charge Past Chicago

Emma Post didn't need much room on the court to deliver again and again for the ninth-ranked Hope College volleyball team.

The senior outside hitter took full advantage of whatever space she received on Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse and spearheaded a four-set victory against the University of Chicago.

The Flying Dutch won 25-14, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18 and raised their record to 7-1.

Post (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) recorded a career-high 16 kills without an error for a .552 hitting percentage.

"In some situations, there was maybe eight inches of seam, and the ball is bigger than that, but she was able to find it," head coach Becky Schmidt said. "She really kept their defense guessing. A big credit to our middles who held them middle blockers a little and created that little bit of seam.

"Emma was really finishing her swings tonight in a way we've been wanting her to as the season's gone along. She's really putting pop on the ball."

Post was one of four Flying Dutch who recorded double-digit kills against Chicago (5-5).

Middle hitters Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) and Charlotte Brecht Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) delivered 14 and 11 kills, respectively.

Sophomore outside hitter Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio, William Mason HS) chipped in 13 kills.

Hope took control by taking a back-and-forth third set that featured nine ties and five lead changes.

In the fourth set, the Flying Dutch trailed only once at 1-0.

Schmidt was pleased with how her team responded after Chicago won the second set.

"In the first set, a lot of breaks kind of went our way. When you zero out that score, it's a chance for Chicago to have a fresh start and it kind of changes the expectation game on our side of the court," Schmidt said. "Chicago responded really well tactically, trying to attack some of the weak spots in our defense. It took us a little while to make some adjustments.

"In the end, I'm really impressed with the way we made those adjustments. We settled in. We kept our composure. I thought (setter) Lauren Lee found so many ways to put our hitters in successful situations. Our hitters were taking advantage of those opportunities."

Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Ann Arbor Skyline) collected 52 assists and helped the Flying Dutch outhit Chicago, .277 to 215.

Hope also out-dug Chicago, 76-67. Junior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) topped the Flying Dutch with a season-high 30 dogs.

Next for Hope is hosting a two-day, six-team tournament on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17, at DeVos Fieldhouse. On Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Flying Dutch faces Clarkson University.
