Volleyball Sweeps Clarkson In Day One Of The Hope Tournament

The ninth-ranked Hope College volleyball team started another busy weekend at DeVos Fieldhouse on a successful note.

The Flying Dutch put head coach Becky Schmidt '99 on the verge of a milestone as well.

Hope defeated Clarkson University (N.Y.) in three sets on Friday, winning the opener of a two-day tournament 25-14, 25-13, 15-16. 

The Flying Dutch (8-1) also gave Schmidt the 499th win of her coaching career. 

Hope plays two more times on Saturday, Sept. 17: at noon against the University of Northwestern (Minnesota) and 2 p.m. against Otterbein University(Ohio). 

Seventh-ranked Northwestern (9-0) defeated fifth-ranked Calvin University in four sets on Friday before Calvin rebounded later in the evening to top 11th-ranked Otterbein (9-2) in four sets.

Against Clarkson, Hope outhit its foe .262 to -.062.

Senior Emma Post (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville HS) and sophomore Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason) led the balanced attack with nine kills apiece.

Sophomore Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) chipped in seven kills.

Freshman Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Ann Arbor Skyline) recorded 33 assists.

Schmidt has a career coaching record of 499-154, including a 461-121 mark with the Flying Dutch.
