Men's Soccer Rides Scoring Outburst for Win vs. Heidelberg

The Hope College men's soccer team erupted for its highest-scoring game in four years and rolled to a 7-0 victory against Heidelberg University (Ohio) on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen's second win in a row featured goals from six different players, including sophomore Thomas De Vries, who recorded a game-high two.

Hope (2-1-5 overall) entered Saturday with five goals on the season.

Head coach David Blahnik was thrilled to see the Flying Dutchmen convert so many scoring opportunities. It was Hope's highest-scoring game since a 6-1 win against Alma College on October 17, 2018, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

"We've been playing pretty well. We've been missing a lot of opportunities to score. It's good to see it all come together," Blahnik said. "We had an amazing two days of training following the win at Carthage. We're really happy with the guys. I think this gives them a little bit of confidence."

Hope outshot Heidelberg (0-6-1) by a 34-3 margin.

Senior Kai Francisco (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing HS) opened the scoring for the Flying Dutchmen by booting a pass from freshman Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) 19 minutes, 6 seconds into the game.

The Flying Dutchmen pushed their lead to 4-0 by halftime time behind two goals from De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian) and one goal from Walters.

Junior Griffin Brown assisted on Walters' fourth goal of the season. Junior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) assisted on the first DeVries goal of the half.

In the second half, three Flying Dutchmen added their first goals of the season: senior Nic Kubert (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Avondale), Jansen, and senior Griffin Doran (Haslett, Michigan / Haslett).

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 3 p.m. Central at Washington University in St. Louis.
