The Hope College volleyball team moved to 2-1 in conference play, 10-4 overall, after Wednesday night's loss to Calvin University, 3-0.
The Flying Dutch would not go down without a fight, as the first of three sets saw five lead changes and nine ties, where Calvin would go on to win 25-20. Hope returned to the second set with the same fire, which resulted in four more lead changes and seven ties. Hope denied Calvin the lead for nine points and had an answer for each of Calvin's responses until the Knights went on a five point run to take the lead and put the score margin to five as well.
Sophomore Annie Lockett (Mason, Ohio / William Mason HS) and sophomore Eva Hartung (Lisle, Illinois / Naperville North) shared a team-high eight kills a piece. Sophomore Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Chrisitan) picked up five kills and finished with a .556 attack efficiency on the night.
DeWeerd, senior Charlotte Brecht (Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) and freshman Lauren Lee (Ann Arbor, Michigan / Skyline) each had team-highs of two blocks a piece in the third MIAA league game of the season.
Lee rounded out her night with 25 assists.
Junior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) recorded a team and game-high 17 digs in the road match.
"One of the things I learned throughout this match tonight, was that we've got some ways to be able to grow throughout the rest of the season, that are going to put us in a position for us to be able to win big games," said head coach Becky Schmidt. "I've got all the confidence in the world that our team is going to be able to [become a championship level team]....This was an environment that tested us, and that we've got to be ready to respond to."
The Flying Dutch head into their third consecutive road game as they travel to Wheaton College on Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m.
