Box Score On the 12th Hope corner kick of the game, the Flying Dutchmen finally added to the scoreboard the game-tying goal.
The Hope College men's soccer team fended off the No. 12 in the nation Bulldogs of Redlands University after their go-ahead goal during the second half, and ended their second game of the 2022 season in a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Much of the first half displayed the Flying Dutchmen in dominating fashion in the offensive zone, having great ball control and having command of the game play.
"We were very frustrated not getting a goal, I felt the guys were very deserving of a goal in the first half, and we gotta work on that," said head coach David Blahnik. "At halftime, I think we tried to continue to play a certain way…and I think it was less of us taking a step back, and more of them making really good adjustments."
Freshman Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan, St. Joseph HS) slid in his second goal of the season and his career with twenty seconds remaining, bringing the crowd to a roar as he circled back from the net to celebrate with the student section.
The final corner kick of the game came from the foot of sophomore Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy), and as it soared towards the awaiting players, the crowd was on their feet in anticipation.
"The guys were moving the ball well, and they were defending at such a high level in their decision making, it makes it easy to coach them."
The Flying Dutchmen head out on the road next weekend to the Ohio Wesleyan University Adidas Invitational in Delaware, Ohio. On Friday, September 9, the men will face off with the hosts, Ohio Wesleyan at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, September 10, Hope's opponent will be Hanover College with a gametime of 5 p.m.
