Men's Soccer Ties Hardin-Simmons in David Blahnik's Debut

Box Score A dramatic swing at the end of a season-opening match left the Hope College men's soccer team a little frustrated but very optimistic, too.

The Flying Dutchmen settled for a 1-1 tie against Hardin-Simmons University (Texas) on Friday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium after the teams traded goals during the final four minutes of regulation.

This year, no overtime is played during the regular season, per NCAA rules.

"Overall, I am very happy with our guys," first-year head coach David Blahnik said. "We're not happy to tie. We wanted to win. We felt we could have won, we should have a ton for us but also our fans who were great. Sometimes, that's soccer. You give up a tough one.

"Our guys are giving everything they have. They're buying in. In the second half, I think we played some really beautiful soccer, exciting soccer. Defensively, we did a very good job of stopping their build. They were dangerous out wide on the long throw. We've asked the guys to do a lot of things in two weeks. We knew it wouldn't be perfect. Overall, I'm happy with them."

The Flying Dutchmen briefly held a 1-0 after freshman Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan, St. Joseph HS) scored with 3 minutes, 45 seconds remaining.

Walters blasted a right-footed kick from the far corner that squirted through the goalkeeper's legs and just inside the left goal post.

Hope picked up its attack after halftime, recording 10 of its 12 shots during the final 45 minutes.

Hardin Simmons kept the pressure on and buried the equalizer with 29 seconds remaining. Off a corner kick, Maxwell Winneker scored off an assist from Jakob Fiol.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, Sept., 3, at 7 p.m. against the University of Redlands (California) at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. Redlands lost at ninth-ranked Calvin University, 4-3, on Friday.
