Four Student-Athletes Receive MIAA Honors

Four Hope College student-athletes have received weekly honors from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association: football's Chase Brown, women's golf's Grace VanDellen, men's soccer's Jake Lyon, and volleyball's Lauren Lee.

FOOTBALL

Senior Chase Brown is the MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week. The biomedical and biomechanical engineering major is receiving this honor for the first time.

Brown engineered a come-from-behind, 38-34, victory against Aurora University (Illinois) on Saturday at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium while throwing for a career-high 456 passing yards. He also equaled a career-high with three touchdown passes.

The Flying Dutchmen scored the game's 21 points, including a 14-play, 83-yard drive that resulted in a go-ahead touchdown with 32 seconds remaining. Brown completed touchdown passes of 54, 74 and 8 yards.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Senior Grace VanDellen is the MIAA Women's Golfer of the Week. The mechanical engineering major from Oxford, Michigan (Lutheran Northwest) is receiving this honor for the first time.

VanDellen helped the Flying Dutch win their first three matches of the 2022 season beginning on Tuesday by firing a round of 6-over-par 78 in the duel with Calvin University at Clearbrook Golf Club while also claiming medalist honors.

Over the weekend, VanDellen shot an 81 on Friday in the first of two matches against Albion College, and scored a 5-over-par 77 in the rematch with the Brits on Saturday.

MEN'S SOCCER

Junior Jake Lyon is the MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The native Farmington Hills, Michigan (Marshall) is receiving this honor for the first time.

Lyon helped anchor the Hope men's soccer defense in Friday's 1-1 draw with Hardin-Simmons, holding them scoreless for 89 ½ minutes at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

In the second tie of the weekend for the Flying Dutchmen, Lyon was a key member in keeping the No. 12 Redlands to a single goal, and only nine shots during the match.

VOLLEYBALL

Freshman Lauren Lee is the MIAA Women's Volleyball Specialty Athlete of the Week. The setter from Plymouth, Michigan (Ann Arbor Skyline) is receiving the honor for the first time.

Lee totaled 148 assists and helped the Flying Dutch win all four matches at the Great Lakes Crossover over the weekend at the Cedar Point Sports Complex in Sandusky, Ohio.

During a five-set victory against Heidelberg University (Ohio) Lee recorded 48 assists. During three set-victories, Lee directed the Hope offense with 35 kills against Hiram College (Ohio) and 29 kills against both Baldwin Wallace University (Ohio) and Bethany College (W.Va.).

Lee also served 10 aces during the four matches, including a personal-best four against Hiram.
