AHCA Hockey Sweeps Ferris State, Sets Up First-Place Showdown

The showdown is set for the Hope College ice hockey team.

The top-ranked Flying Dutchmen swept Ferris State University, 6-1 and 3-1, over the weekend to set up a first-place showdown in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference West Division.

Hope will skate against ninth-ranked Grand Valley State University on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 3-4. The Flying Dutchmen (22-1 overall) are 8-0 in West Division play, while GVSU is 9-1.

Pn Friday, Feb 3, at 7:30 p.m. Hope will host GVSU at Griff's IceHouse West. The Flying Dutchmen will travel to Griff's Georgetown Ice Arena on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 5:30 p.m.

Hope remain unbeaten in division play with a 6-1 victory on home ice on Friday and a 3-1 road win on Saturday in Cedar Springs.

The Flying Dutchmen dominated play, outshooting Ferris State, 57-11, on Friday and, 51-26, on Saturday.

On Friday, Hope answered a Ferris State 5 ½ minutes into the game by scoring twice 11 minutes later in a span of 61 seconds.

Freshman forward Ryan Pomranky (Midland, Michigan / Midland Dow HS) evened the score at the 16:43 mark. Sophomore Mickey VanAntwerp followed at the 17:44 mark with the go-ahead goal.

The Flying Dutchmen iced the game with three third-period goals, including two from senior forward Kevin Healy (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford). Healy now has 21 goals on the season.

On Saturday, Hope jumped out a 2-0 lead with goals from senior left wing Lucas Barber (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) at 14:13 of the first period and freshman defenseman Austin Ieuter (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) at 1:33 of the second period.

Junior goalie Ryan McClelland (Grand Rapids, Michigan / G.R. Catholic Central) made 25 saves for the Flying Dutchmen.
