While most facilities on campus were quiet over the break, the same was not true at DeVos Fieldhouse. On the morning of December 30, the 4-sided, 6000+ pound scoreboard that has been in place since the building's opening in 2005, was lowered to the floor to make way for a replacement.Â
For the last 17 years, it has kept score for 718 Hope basketball and volleyball contests, thousands of athletic practices and been a beacon of amber-colored, monotone light for countless campus and community events. It has served the college well over this time and will now be scrapped out and recycled for use elsewhere.Â
The new scoreboard has a similar center hung design and features four, 15 by 9 foot LED full-color video boards which will allow the college to digitally share our story in new and exciting ways at events for years to come. The board was lifted to the rafters of the fieldhouse late last week by way of a new hoist system which will allow for a variety of viewing options and easier access for maintenance in the future. The funding for the new scoreboard is ongoing and was kickstarted by Pepsico as well as other corporate sponsors through the Athletics' Anchor Sponsorship program.Â
The new scoreboard makes its debut just in time for the Wednesday, Jan. 11, basketball doubleheader when the Flying Dutch will play Adrian College at 5:30 PM followed by the men's Rivalry game versus Calvin University at 8 p.m.
