Freshman Wendy Miedema Lifts Women's Soccer to Dramatic Win at Alma

Wendy Miedema's first collegiate goal came at the perfect time for the Hope College women's soccer team.

The freshman midfielder scored with 4 ½ minutes remaining to lift the Flying Dutch to a 2-1 victory at Alma College on Tuesday afternoon.

Hope improved to 6-2-4 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play.

Miedema (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Loy Norrix HS) delivered for the Flying Dutch after Alma failed to clear the ball with a header inside the penalty box.

Before the ball fell to the ground, Miedema kicked the ball with her right from about 20 yards out just outside the top of the penalty box. The shot sailed over the head of Alma goalkeeper Allison Bush but still tucked underneath the crossbar.

"She saved us. We had some chances and put them wide. We let Alma hang around," head coach Leigh Sears said. "I just think she didn't think about it and shot it. When you don't have a lot of time, you just do what you know how to do. She has the ability to do that."

Miedema answered Alma's tying goal from midfielder Lily Stephan in the 72nd minute. It was Stephan's first goal of the season.

Despite being outshot significantly, the Scots (0-9-1, 0-3-1 MIAA) threatened to at least earn a draw for the second consecutive game. Alma played Albion to a scoreless tie on Saturday.

Hope held a 1-0 lead for 54 minutes.

In the 18th minute, sophomore forward Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian) set up forward Carley Wagasky (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) with a centering cross from near the left post.

It was Wagasky's team-leading fifth goal of the season and the third time in four games she's scored.

Harris now has a team-best five assists on the season.

The Flying Dutch outshot Alma by an 18-6 margin.

Freshman keeper Clara Feenstra needed to make only one save for Hope. Bush had six saves for the Scots.

Hope's next game is Saturday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Albion.
