The Hope College men's soccer team overcame an early deficit with two late goals on Wednesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium and earned a 2-1 victory against Kalamazoo College.
The Flying Dutchmen improved to 8-2-3 on the season and 2-1 in MIAA play.
Senior defender Jake Lyon (Marshall, Michigan / Marshall HS), unfazed by the tension, slipped through the Kalamazoo defense and delivered the game-winning goal in the 80th minute.
Lyon had one word to describe his goal after the match. "Electric."
The tense second half was marked by four yellow cards, 14 fouls, and 17 combined shots.
"I was proud of our guys for keeping their heads, keeping their cool and being mature," head coach David Blahnik said.
A foul in the box created an opportunity for Hope to level the game in the 63rd minute. The team elected sophomore Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein HS) to take the kick, and he buried the equalizer for his second goal of the season.
Momentum swung in favor of Hope, but the Flying Dutchmen had only put three of 12 shots on frame to this point in the match.
Kalamazoo kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 36th minute. Emilio Romo headed home a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) locked up the win with two of his five saves in the last five minutes.
Hope will travel to the University of Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m.
