Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Alan Babbitt

Men's Soccer Edged by Trine

The Hope College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Trine University on Tuesday night at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Thunder struck for a second-half goal that propelled them into sole possession of second place in the MIAA standings.

Hope fell to 8-3-3 overall and 2-2 in MIAA play.

The Flying Dutchmen sit in fifth place in the league standings but can move into sole possession of third place with a victory at sixth-place University of Olivet on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 4:30 p.m.

Trine improved to 3-1-1 in MIAA play and 3-1-1 overall.

The game was the sixth in a row between the two teams decided by one or fewer goals. There have been four one-goal victories and two ties during that stretch dating back to the 2021 spring season.

Tyler Murphy scored the decisive goal in the 56th minute after the Thunder made a quick counter from the top of their penalty area.

Murphy sprinted ahead of the Hope defense on a breakaway and beat goalie Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) with a low shot. It was Murphy's eighth goal of the season.

Hope earned an 18-13 edge in shots, but Trine recorded an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.

Hesselbein made three saves for the Flying Dutchmen.

Dillon Lambert stopped six shots for Trine.
