Men's Soccer Strikes Back, Earns 2-1 Victory at Olivet

Sparked by a tying goal just seconds before halftime, the Hope College men's soccer team posted a 2-1, come-from-behind victory at The University of Olivet on Thursday.

The regionally-ranked Flying Dutchmen jumped into third place in the MIAA standings after winning the game that was rescheduled five days earlier because of unplayable field conditions at Olivet.

Hope is now 9-3-3 overall and 3-2 in MIAA play with two regular-season games remaining. The Flying Dutchmen have clinched one of six berths to the MIAA Tournament.

Junior Thomas De Vries (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) delivered the game-winning goal against Olivet (2-5-6, 1-2-2 MIAA).

Sophomore AJ Boucher (Delton, Michigan / Gull Lake) also scored for the Flying Dutchmen.

De Vries put Hope ahead in the 68th minute off an assist from sophomore Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein).

De Vries now has a team-leading seven goals on the season, a career-high. It was Pauly's second assist of the season.

The game went from scoreless to 1-1 late in the first half.

Olivet jumped ahead on an unassisted Noah Runnels strike with 1 minute, 37 seconds remaining.

Hope scored the equalizer 8.8 seconds before halftime off Boucher's foot following a corner kick from junior Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy).

It was Hrvojevic's third assist of the season and the eighth of his career.

Hope went on to outshoot Olivet by a 23-6 margin, including an 11-1 edge during the second half. The Flying Dutchmen finished with six corner kicks to Olivet's one.

Junior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) made two saves for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen trail second-place Trine University by one point heading into their next game on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. against Albion College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium. It is Senior Day.

With nine points, Hope leads fourth-place Kalamazoo College by one point, fifth-place Albion by two and sixth-place Olivet by five.
