Men's Soccer Shuts Out Albion on Senior Day

The Hope College men's soccer team battled the full 90 minutes to collect a Senior Day victory over Albion College on a brisk fall afternoon on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

The Flying Dutchmen collected a 2-0 win with a goal in each half. The Orange and Blue remained in third place in the MIAA standings and clinched an MIAA Tournament berth.

Hope is now 10-3-3 overall this season and 4-2 in league play.  There is one regular-season game remaining.

"We were happy with the outcome. Albion is a tough team, home or away. They're always organized. They work really hard. They win a lot of balls in the air. We knew we were going to have to play a complete game today," said head coach David Blahnik. "I thought our seniors played really well on Senior Day. Even though we've been defending well, it's our first shutout in awhile. It was good to have a clean sheet again."

Before the match, Hope honored six seniors: Colten Baker (Byron Center, Michigan / Byron Center), Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern), Griffin Brown (Livonia, Michigan / Livonia Stevenson ), Matt Wimmer (Farmington Hills, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit), Jake Lyon (Marshall, Michigan / Marshall ), and O'lee Olsen (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia).

Jansen struck first for Hope in the 27th minute of play  after sending a deflected ball that landed at his feet the opposite way of the diving Albion goalkeeper into the top corner of the net. It was Jansen's fifth goal of the season.

Freshman Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central) added to the lead with his second goal of the season. He, too, collected a rebound shot and goal combo, this time during the 59th minute.

Hope outshot Albion (7-6-1, 2-3-1 MIAA) by a 19-4 margin.

Junior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) made one save for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope travels to take on Alma on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 3:30 p.m. in the final regular-season contest.

The Flying Dutchmen remain one point behind second-place Trine. A Hope win at Alma and a Trine tie or loss at Adrian on Wednesday, Oct. 25, would give Hope the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament and a first-round bye.
