Men's Soccer Converts Three Penalty Kicks, Rolls Past Alma

A second-half push fueled by three penalty kick conversions launched the Hope College men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory at Alma College on Wednesday.

The third-highest-scoring match of the year secured the Flying Dutchmen a 5-2 record in MIAA play and the third seed for the upcoming MIAA Tournament. The six-team field will be formally announced on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Regionally-ranked Hope recorded a satisfying victory while improving its overall record to 11-3-3 overall.

"It was a great overall total team effort on the road today," said head coach David Blahnik. "We are proud of how the guys have been able to adjust to away games regardless of the weather or other circumstances."

The Flying Dutchmen scored four times during the second half to hand Alma (4-11-2) a season-ending defeat.

In the first half, junior Mario Hrvojevic (Lincolnwood, Illinois / Loyola Academy HS) struck for his fifth goal of the season 12 ½ minutes into the match.

After halftime, sophomore Cole Pauly (Mundelein, Illinois / Mundelein) snagged a 2-0 lead for Hope 38 seconds into the period. Pauly recorded his third goal of the season by burying a penalty kick following an Alma foul in the box.

Ten minutes later, another Alma foul in the box set up sophomore Matthew Davidson (Grand Ledge, Michigan / Grand Ledge) firing a penalty kick past the Alma goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Then, 15 minutes later, Davidson scored again off an assist from senior Ethan Jansen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern).

Sophomore Reece Brown (Livonia, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson) converted Hope's third penalty kick in the second half during the 89th minute. It was Brown's third goal of the season.

Hope outshot Alma 25-7, with 14 shots on goal.

Junior Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) stopped two shots in 71-plus minutes for his second consecutive shutout and his sixth of the season.

"I'm happy that the team earned another shutout," Blahnik said. "Our defensive midfielders, backline, and goalkeepers have helped conclude the regular season with a nationally-respected goals-against-average. We are excited to get back to work tomorrow for postseason play and looking forward to a competitive MIAA conference tournament."

The Flying Dutchmen will host a quarterfinal MIAA tournament game on Saturday, Oct. 28, against an opponent and at a time to be announced.
