Third-Ranked Volleyball Completes Unbeaten Run at Midwest Invitational

The third-ranked Hope College volleyball team hit the 20-win mark for the season with a perfect run through the Midwest Invitational this weekend.

On Saturday, the Flying Dutch spiked the University of California, Santa Cruz in four sets, then downed Susquehanna University (Pa.) in three sets.

On Friday, Hope swept Defiance College (Ohio) in three sets.

The Flying Dutch are now 20-1 on the season and winners of seven consecutive matches.

In the morning at Calvin University, Hope faced a new opponent in the Banana Slugs of UC-Santa Cruz and dominated three of the sets en route to a 25-9, 20-25, 25-9, 25-12 victory.

Junior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) slammed home a match-high 15 kills for the Flying Dutch. 

Junior Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian and sophomore Ella Contant (Elmhurst, Illinois / York Community) chipped in eight kills apiece. DeWeerd also had seven blocks.

Sophomore Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) finished with 40 assists.

Hope hit .267 as a team while holding UC-Santa Cruz (12-25) to negative-.009.

In the afternoon, the Flying Dutch topped Susquehanna, 25-20, 25-14, 25-13.

VanderWeide recorded a match-high 15 kills. DeWeerd had 11 kills.

Lee collected 37 assists.

Hope finished with a .420 hitting percentage to Susquehanna's .154.

The Flying Dutch return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at Alma College.
