The Hope College women's soccer team struck early and left no doubt on a celebratory day at Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
The Flying Dutch defeated The University of Olivet, 7-0, on Senior Day and clinched the No. 2 seed for the MIAA Tournament with one regular-season game remaining.
Hope moved to 8-2-5 overall this season and 5-1-1 in league play.
"It was a big deal for us to go out and start fast and play how we wanted to play, because at times we have been playing to the level of who we're playing," head coach Leigh Sears said. "It was nice to come out and get a lot of goals and to get everyone some time who hasn't been playing a lot."
Before the match, Hope honored six seniors: Elisa Melville (Jackson, Michigan / Lumen Christi HS), Anna Biebel (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern), Madison Holloway (Macatawa, MI / Holland Christian), Jenna Mustapha (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern), Tally Martinez (Zeeland, Michigan / Zeeland West) and Natalie Hammer (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).
Melville led the way with two goals in the first 15 minutes of play.
Hope ended the game with two other players with multi-goal performances.
Freshman Jenna Schreiber (Jenison, Michigan / Unity Christian) scored her second and third goals of the season.
Junior Margaret Owsiany (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) scored her first two goals of the season during the second half of the match.
Freshman Bri Rose (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) buried the seventh and final goal of the game from 30 yards out in the 79th minute.
The Hope defense, led by seniors Mustapha and Martinez, allowed no shots on goal during the contest and no shots of any kind during the first half.
It was the Flying Dutch's second consecutive shutout and the fourth of the season.
Hope travels to Saint Mary's College on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. in the regular-season finale.
With the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Tournament secured, the Flying Dutch earn a bye for the quarterfinals and will host a semifinal on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at a time to be determined.
