Volleyball Serves Up Victory in Top 10 Matchup vs. Calvin

The Rivalry. Hope versus Calvin. Any way you play it, you know you're in for a good game. And Wednesday was no different.

The third-ranked Hope College volleyball team served up a four-set victory over Calvin University in a Top 10 matchup witnessed by a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 2,905.

The 25-21, 28-26, 22-25, 25-18 decision gave the Flying Dutch their 15th victory in 16 tries this season and the inside track on the MIAA title chase.

Hope shares first place in the league standings with Adrian College; both teams are 3-0 in MIAA matches. Either Calvin or Hope have won the past 18 MIAA titles.

Calvin and Hope will have a rematch on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m. at Calvin, but that match will not count toward the MIAA race.

"It was a pretty classic Hope-Calvin game in terms of two teams just trying to slug it out," head coach Becky Schmidt said of the 137th meeting between the two rivals. "I think our presence at the net came alive in the fourth set. We started really pressing across the net and taking some angles away from their hitters."

After Calvin forced a fourth set by trailing only briefly early in the third set, Hope jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the fourth set and never gave up the lead.

Junior Addie VanderWeide (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) put up a match-high 22 kills and a .419 attack percentage in her first game against Calvin.

Teammates freshman Kamryn Burbridge (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and junior Alison DeWeerd (Kentwood, Michigan / South Christian) slammed home 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Burbridge also recorded a team-high six blocks.

Hope outhit Calvin .284 to .182.

Sophomore Lauren Lee (Plymouth, Michigan / Skyline) tallied 52 assists against the Knights.

Senior Olivia Fiebing (Traverse City, Michigan / Central) had a match-high 23 digs for the Flying Dutch in the win.

Aerin Baker topped Calvin (13-3, 1-1 MIAA) with 16 kills. The Knights still lead the all-time series, 93-44.

Hope's next match is Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at Saint Mary's College.
