Eight Women's Swimmers, Two Divers Selected to All-MIAA Team

Ten members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion Hope College women's swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors for the 2022-23 season.

Most Valuable Swimmer Sara Kraus and Most Valuable Diver Abby Koops headline the All-MIAA selections.

Kraus and Koops are joined by Flying Dutch teammates Sophia Farbarzhevich, Greta Gidley, Katie Hermann, Alyssa Kerkman, Lauren Ryle, Ashlea Swingewood, Laurel Wasiniak and Grace Wesley.

This is the second All-MIAA distinction for Kraus and Koops and the first for Farbarzhevich, Gidley, Hermann, Kerkman, Ryle, Swingewood, Wasiniak, and Wesley.

Kraus (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford HS) claimed MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer honors for the second year in a row after repeating as MIAA champion in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with meet-record performances. 

The exercise science major swam on all three Hope's MIAA championship relays: the meet-record 200 medley relay, the 400 medley relay, and the 800 freestyle relay. Kraus also finished runner-up in the 200 individual medley.

Koops (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) earned MIAA Most Valuable Diver distinction for the second consecutive season after sweeping league titles on both boards.
The sophomore nursing major placed first on the 1-meter and 3-meter at the MIAA Championships.

Farbarzhevich (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) scored on both boards at the MIAA Championships. The junior Spanish major took second on the 1-meter board at the MIAA Championships and fourth on the 3-meter board.

Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy) captured two MIAA titles in her first league meet last week. The sophomore clocked first-place swims in the 100 freestyle and the 200 individual medley (meet record) and a runner-up swim in the 100 butterfly. Gidley also competed on the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.

Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) qualified for two 'A' Finals at the MIAA Championships. The freshman recorded a runner-up swim in the 100 backstroke and a third-place one in the 200 individual medley. Hermann swam on the 200 medley and 400 medley relays.

Kerkman (South Bend, Indiana / St. Joseph) advanced to the 'A' Finals in three events at the MIAA Championships. The senior nursing major took first in the 200 and 400 medley relays, third in the 200 butterfly, fourth in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 butterfly.

Ryle (Grand Rapids, Michigan / G.R. Catholic Central) swam to a league title in the 100 breaststroke. The sophomore psychology major also placed third in the 200 breaststroke and sixth in the 50 freestyle.

Swingewood (Carmel, Indiana / Carmel) won the MIAA title in the 200 butterfly. The freshman clocked a first-place swim in the 800 freestyle relay, a second-place time in the 400 individual medley and a third-place effort in the 500 freestyle.

Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) qualified for the 'A' Finals in three events. The freshman placed first in the 400 medley and the 800 freestyle relays, runner-up in the 200 freestyle and fourth in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
 
Wesley (Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan / Grosse Pointe South) claimed an MIAA title in the 1,650 freestyle. The sophomore exercise science major also finished third in the 400 individual medley and eighth in the 200 butterfly.
