The Hope College women's swimming and diving team unlocked a bit of 1990s history on Thursday evening at the NCAA Division III Championships, achieving two milestones that took place before anyone on the current roster was even born.
The Flying Dutch recorded their highest finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 32 years with a school record, while senior Katie Hermann (Canton, Michigan / Mercy) became the first Hope swimmer since 1994 to earn All-America honors in the 400 individual medley.
Hope sits in ninth place at the meet's halfway point with 75 points. The Flying Dutch are seeking their second straight Top-10 showing at the NCAA Championships.Â
The 200 freestyle relay team of senior Greta Gidley (Franklin, Michigan / Mercy), freshman Claudia Busse (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven), senior Laurel Wasiniak (Northville, Michigan / Northville) and senior Bella Turner (Chelsea, Michigan / Chelsea) earned First Team All-American honors and finished second in the event with a school record time of 1:31.44, lowering the mark by .31 seconds.Â
The previous school record of 1:31.75 was held by Gidley, Lauren Ryle, Turner and Wasiniak from a season ago.
The second-place showing in the relay tied the highest finish in program history, which was achieved in 1994 by the quartet of Susan Looman, Sara Looman, Denice Masselink and Sarah DeWitt.
NYU won the event with an NCAA Division III record time of 1:29.38, marking the first time a team has gone under the 1:30.00 mark.
Gidley began the relay with an opening 50 of 23.04, lowering the school record by one-hundredth of a second. Busse, Wasiniak and Turner added to the effort with splits under 23 seconds.Â
