Men's Lacrosse Nets Season-High in Goals, Cruises Past Benedictine (Ill.)

It was worth the unexpected wait for the Hope College men's lacrosse team.

The Flying Dutchmen rolled to a 20-2 victory against visiting Benedictine University (Illinois) on Saturday after the start of the non-league game at Van Andel Soccer Stadium was delayed for 3 ½ hours due to the Eagles' transportation issues.

Hope improved to 3-2 overall while registering a season-high in goals.

The Flying Dutchmen spread the offense around as nine of their 13 goal scorers scored once apiece.

Junior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / University of Detroit Jesuit HS) led Hope with a season-high five goals.

The Flying Dutchmen also received two goals apiece from junior midfielder Kyler Dana (Muskegon, Michigan / North Muskegon), freshman attacker Andon Rieger (Elmhurst, Illinois / York), and sophomore midfielder Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville).

Senior midfielder Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) recorded a season-high five assists and finished one off the Hope stadium record.

Hope jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after junior midfielder Jack Cervantes (Canton, Michigan / Canton) opened the scoring at the 8:26 mark.

The Flying Dutchmen then pounced on Benedictine turnovers to strike for four goals in a span of two minutes late in the quarter.

Hope did not yield a goal until Benedictine's Ben Zimmerman scored with 5:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Flying Dutchmen's next game is Saturday, March 18, at 1 p.m. Central at Rhodes College (Tenn.) in Memphis.
