ACHA Hockey Skates Past Central Michigan In National Tournament Opener

The top-ranked Hope College ice hockey team started its quest for a third consecutive national championship on a winning note.

The Flying Dutchmen opened pool play with a 7-2 victory against 16th-seeded Central Michigan University on Thursday at the ACHA Division III national championships at New England Sports Center near Boston, Massachusetts.

Hope (30-1) will skate next in pool play on Friday, March 17, at 5 p.m. vs. the ninth-seeded United States Air Force Academy. The game will be streamed view pay-per-view at hockeytv.com.

Air Force lost to the University of Missouri, 7-5, on Thursday.

Against Central Michigan, Hope used a balanced attack that featured seven different goal scorers.

Three Flying Dutchmen registered one goal and two assists: junior right wing Jake Adams (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids), senior center Gabe Gunneson (Rockford, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) and senior left wing Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids).

Hope also received goals from junior right wing Nolan Convertini (Muskegon, Michigan / Muskegon Catholic Central), senior defenseman Logan Faustyn (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos), sophomore defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills), and freshman forward Keegan McNamara (Linden, Michigan / Fenton).

Sophomore goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) stopped 25 shots for the Flying Dutchmen.
