A six-goal third period for the Hope College women's lacrosse team was just a glimpse of the well-oiled machine 16-6 win against Otterbein University on Friday afternoon.
A blustery day nor the Cardinals could stop the force of the Flying Dutch who broke a three-game losing streak with the large win at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
Tied at three after the first period, the Flying Dutch soared in three goals while a player down due to penalties to help secure an 8-4 lead at the half.
Sophomore Juli Kirkpatrick collected two of her four goals in the game while down during the second quarter, and Julia Brown tacked on the third player down goal for Hope's seventh of the game.
Hope tallied seven unanswered goals, including outscoring Otterbein 6-0 in the third quarter, to jump out to a 15-4 lead. The Cardinals would respond with two goals of their own in a row late in the fourth quarter after being shut out since the the 10:18 mark in the second.
Sophomore Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt HS) had a game-high five ground balls, and four caused turnovers for Hope, while also grabbing a single goal and assist.
Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn) and Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) led Hope in scoring, with Kirkpatrick slinging in a game-high four goals to finish with five total points and Frederickson grabbing three goals for six total points in the win.
"Juli has become a leader for us and it has definitely been showing up on the field," said head coach Keagan Pontious.
Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and sophomore Ruthie Anderson (Lowell, Michigan / Lowell) each put in two goals a piece.
Goaltender Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) stood tall in net for Hope making nine saves to improve her record to 2-3.
"I think that Maddie did a great job at being patient today, especially on our clears."
Hope heads out for a two-game road trip as they travel to Tennessee to take on Sewanee University on Tuesday, March 21 at 6 p.m.
