ACHA Hockey Skates Past Michigan for Seventh Vezina Cup Title

The Hope College ice hockey team has won the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference Vezina Cup for the seventh time in team history and the first time in four years.

The top-ranked Flying Dutchmen defeated the third-ranked University of Michigan's ACHA team, 3-1, on Saturday in the title game at Patterson Ice Arena in Grand Rapids.

Freshman Hunter Maschke (Portage, Michigan / Portage Central HS) broke a 1-1 tie with less than two minutes remaining in the third period. Senior left wing Lucas Barber (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) and freshman forward Keegan McNamara (Linden, Michigan / Fenton) were credited with assists.

With three seconds remaining, senior forward Mason Weiss (Flushing, Michigan / Michigan Connections Academy) added an unassisted insurance goal.

Sophomore goalie Maclane Schick (Kohler, Wisconsin / Kohler) stopped 28 shots for Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen overcame an early 1-0 deficit. Michigan took the lead through the third period with a power-play goal.

Senior forward Kevin Healy (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) evened the score late in the second period. Sophomore defenseman Nolan Holtrop (Walker, Michigan / Kenowa Hills) and senior defenseman Logan Faustyn (Okemos, Michigan / Okemos) were credited with assists.

Hope returns to the ice at the ACHA National Championships in Boston that start on Thursday, March 16 with pool play.
