Women's Lacrosse Nets Season-High in Goals, Rolls Past Trine

The Hope College women's lacrosse team shined brightly on a sunny afternoon at home.

The Flying Dutch led from start to finish for a second consecutive MIAA game, rolling to a 20-5 victory against visiting Trine University on Tuesday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope produced season-highs in goals and assists. The Flying Dutch successfully followed up a 17-5 victory at Saint Mary's College on Friday.

An adjustment in pace has allowed Hope to flourish, head coach Keagan Pontious said.

"We normally like to play super fast. This is the first time we haven't played fast. We're slowing it down," Pontious said. "This year we are able to be super patient and be confident in every single shot that we're taking. That has allowed us to have some more shots, but also higher-percentage ones where we can finish at a good clip."

The Flying Dutch (5-5 overall, 2-0 MIAA) lead the league in scoring for all games with a 14.40 average and for MIAA games at 18.5.

Hope's next game is on Saturday, April 15, at 1 p.m. at Alma College.

Against Trine, the Flying Dutch jumped out to a 4-0 lead during the first 6 minutes, 10 seconds of the game thanks to two goals from junior attacker Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Hartland) and one apiece from sophomore midfielder Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn) and freshman midfielder Sydney LaPrairie (Rochester, Michigan / Stoney Creek).

Hope never trailed at Saint Mary's either after leading 6-0 after 15 minutes of play. The Flying Dutch answered a Trine goal with 5:22 left in the first quarter by scoring the first five goals of the second quarter for an 11-1 lead with 6:59 remaining in the first half.

Salazar finished with a game-high four goals, giving her 11 over the past three games combined.

Nine different Flying Dutch scored, including Kirkpatrick, LaPrairie and sophomore attacker Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) with three apiece.

Freshman attacker Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) and junior midfielder Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) chipped in two goals apiece.

Brown also registered a game-high five assists.

Hope set up its offensive attack by winning 21 of 28 draw controls for a 75-percent clip. Freshman midfielder Caleigh Randall (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) earned a team-high 10 draw controls.

Despite building a large lead early, the Flying Dutch did not let up defensively.

Hope limited Trine (3-4, 0-2 MIAA) to 12 shots. The Flying Dutch committed 18 turnovers.

Junior goalkeeper Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) stopped three of the six shots she faced in 41 minutes, 48 seconds of action before freshman Samantha Smith (Westfield, Indiana / Westfield) replaced her in the second half.

Pontious credited senior defender Delaney Kirinovic (Lansing, Michigan / DeWitt) for keeping the Flying Dutch organized on the back end.

"We call Delaney our fearless leader back there," Pontious said. "She is the soundest mind out there. She helps us stay calm. She is the voice of reason when we're playing a team that is good and we know we have to stay disciplined. This week, we talked in practice about how to push each other and hold each other accountable to be disciplined in those situations. It's cool to see her do that and also have freshmen stepping up and being able to do that."
