Men's Lacrosse Hands Adrian First MIAA Loss

A five-goal burst in the third quarter launched the Hope College men's lacrosse team to a 15-9 victory at Adrian College on Tuesday.

The Flying Dutchmen handed the Bulldogs their first MIAA loss of the season and moved a half-game back of second place in the MIAA standings.

Hope, which improved to 8-5 overall, is now 2-1 in MIAA play. 

Adrian (8-6, 3-1 MIAA) grabbed an 8-7 lead early in the second half by scoring twice in the first four minutes of the third quarter.

The Flying Dutchmen won the faceoff following Alec Winegar's go-ahead goal at the 11:09 mark and evened the score at 8-8 48 seconds later on an unassisted goal from sophomore attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern HS).

Sophomore Caden Brainerd (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) recorded the second of four consecutive faceoff wins, giving Hope possession again.

Forty-two seconds later, sophomore midfielder David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth) struck for the go-ahead goal and a 9-8 lead.

The Flying Dutchmen tacked on goals from Bowen at the 9:02 mark, senior attacker Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) at the 8:40 mark and Brace at the 5:34 mark for a commanding 12-8 lead.

Junior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) assisted on Hope's final two goals of the decisive surge.

After yielding a goal to Adrian's Jake Coakley at the 4:46 mark of the third quarter, Hope held the Bulldogs scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Senior goalie John Shea (Commerce Township, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central) made nine saves for the Flying Dutchmen. 

Hope also picked up 51 ground balls to Adrian's 29. Brainerd's eight ground balls and Mann's seven topped the Flying Dutchmen.

Brace finished with a game-high five goals.

Bowen collected three goals and two assists. He assisted team-high assist honors with Mann and Stecco.

Senior attacker Alex Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) also scored twice. Hope received goals from nine different players. 

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m. against Kalamazoo College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
