Men's Lacrosse Matches Season-High In Goals, Beats Kalamazoo

The Hope College men's lacrosse team watched how Kalamazoo College jumped to an early lead against Calvin University earlier this week and never relinquished it.

The Flying Dutchmen didn't let the Hornets sting them the same way.

Hope marched to a 20-5 victory on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium by scoring the first six goals of the game.

The Flying Dutchmen matched their season-high in goals scored while improving to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in MIAA play. Hope is in sole possession of second place in the league standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

Head coach Michael Schanhals liked how his team met the challenge the Hornets presented.

"What they did to Calvin was get out to a big lead and hold on. We wanted to take away that opportunity for them," Schanhals said. "We squarely had the momentum on our side. Our ball movement was exceptionally clean and quick. I thought our ride put a lot of pressure on them. They didn't get anything easy.

"Kalamazoo is a hard-working team, a well-coached team. I think we did a nice job."

Senior attacker Alex Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest HS) scored twice in a span of 1 minute, 15 seconds to put the Flying Dutchmen ahead, 6-0, with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Kalamazoo (6-6, 2-2 MIAA) broke through with the next three goals, including Ronin Honda's strike with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

After the two teams traded goals early in the second quarter, Hope reeled off the next six for a 13-4 halftime lead.

The Flying Dutchmen outshot Kalamazoo, 52-20, and drew assists on half of their goals.

Junior attacker Michael Mann (Plymouth, Michigan / Detroit Jesuit) topped Hope in scoring with five goals and two assists.

Sophomore midfielders David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth) and Andrew Lanham (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) chipped in three goals apiece.

Senior attacker Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) contributed two goals and four assists.

Sophomore attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) recorded two goals and three assists.

The Flying Dutchmen also received one goal apiece from freshman midfielder Will Jewell (Northville, Michigan / Detroit Catholic Central), freshman attacker Will Tobias (San Diego, California / St. Augustine) and sophomore long-stick midfielder Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville).

Hope's next game is on Wednesday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at Alma College.
