Freshman Julia Brown's six-goal game fueled the Hope College women's lacrosse team's 16-9 win at Calvin University on Saturday. Â
The Flying Dutch's eighth victory of the season secured an MIAA Tournament berth for Hope, with the team on the verge of its first MIAA regular-season championship.
Hope, which is currently on a five-game win streak, is now 5-0 in league play and 8-5 overall.
The Flying Dutch lead second-place Saint Mary's College by one game with two games remaining. Hope can clinch at title share and the top seed for the league tournament with a victory against Adrian College on Tuesday, April 25, at 4 p.m. at home.Â
On Saturday, The game started with a goal from sophomore Juli Kirkpatrick (Granger, Indiana / Penn HS), but Calvin quickly answered to tie the game. The Knights then went on a run, scoring four unanswered goals in the last 2:46 of the first period to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Hope wasn't going to give up that easily. Junior Molly Frederickson (Alto, Michigan / Lowell) began the flurry of Hope goals to regain the lead, 5-4, in the second quarter. Kirkpatrick, sophomore Kerrigan Brown (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) and Julia Brown (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) also fueled the Flying Dutch's comeback.
Calvin tied the game two different times during the second period, but Hope continued to shine and held off the Knights and finished the third period with an 8-6 lead.
Calvin never got closer than within two goals of Hope as the Flying Dutch continued to show their dominance through the final period. Frederickson notched three goals in her second consecutive five-point game.Â
Three Flying Dutch tallied two goals apiece:Â junior Elena Salazar (Howell, Michigan / Howell), Kerrigan Brown and Kirkpatrick.Â
Frederickson and junior Kristen Szost (Jenison, Michigan / Jenison International Academy) each had a team-high four draw-control wins.Â
Junior goaltender Maddie Yakes (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) was instrumental in the win, making 17 saves, in her 8th win of the season. Yakes scooped up a team-high seven ground balls.Â
