Men's Lacrosse Owns Second Half, Surges Past Calvin

Hope takes a five-game winning streak into next week's MIAA Tournament.

In front of a Senior Night and a season-high crowd of 795 people, the Hope College men's lacrosse team was not lacking for energy against rival Calvin University on Friday.

Neither was the Flying Dutchmen's opponent, who trailed by just one goal at halftime.

The Flying Dutchmen plugged back into their game in the second half and electrified their crowd with a 17-9 victory in the regular-season finale. Hope improved to 14-0 all-time against Calvin.

"We know how expectations are. We know it's a rivalry game, and everyone is a little keyed up," head coach Michael Schanhals said. "We were winning by a goal at halftime, which isn't a bad situation, especially with the way we play third quarters typically.

"We focused on some of our fundamental things. It's what happens in a game like this. You get a little fired up, and sometimes you forget to do all the little things. We did a really nice job of that in the second half."

Hope outscored the Knights by a 6-1 margin during the third quarter and a 9-2 margin for the entire second half.

The Flying Dutchmen (11-5, 5-1 MIAA) will head into next week's MIAA Tournament on a five-game winning streak. Seeded second, Hope will host third-seeded Adrian College in a semifinal on Wednesday, May 3, at Van Andel Soccer Stadium at a time to be announced.

The loss ended the season for Calvin (7-10, 2-4). The Knights could tie Kalamazoo College for fourth place in the MIAA standings if Kalamazoo loses to Trine University on Saturday, April 29, but Kalamazoo wins the tiebreaker for the final playoff spot because of a 12-11 victory over the Knights on April 18.

Sophomore midfielder David Brace (Plymouth, Michigan / Plymouth HS) snapped a 7-7 tie with his 28th goal of the season at the three-minute mark of the second half.

Brace then set up senior attacker Alex Goodall (Clarkston, Michigan / Lutheran Northwest) for the opening goal of the second half 1 minute, 17 seconds into the third quarter.

Three goals from sophomore attacker Sam Bowen (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Eastern) pushed Hope's lead to 14-7 before Calvin finally stopped the run on a Thomas Smith goal six seconds before the end of the third quarter. Smith led the Knights with three goals.

"It was a simple adjustment to get a little more spacing on our ground balls, so that we could get to ground balls better," Schanhals said. "Once we get ground balls, we're pretty tough to stop in transition."

Hope scooped up 26 ground balls after halftime to Calvin's 13. The Knights were plus-2 in ground balls during the first half.

Sophomore long stick-midfielder Luke Wierengo (Northville, Michigan / Northville) collected a team-high eight ground balls for the Flying Dutchmen.

Offensively, Bowen's eight points on five goals and three assists led Hope.

Senior attacker Colin Stecco (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids) chipped in three goals and three assists.

Goodall finished with three goals, while Brace had two goals and two assists.
