Women's Golf Grabs First-Round Lead at Hope Spring Invitational

The Hope College women's golf team holds the first-round lead at its 36-hole, two-day Spring Invitational.

Led by senior Rita Cheney, the Flying Dutch carded a 344 team score on Friday at Clearbrook Golf Club in Saugatuck.

Hope carries a three-stroke lead heading into the final round that begins on Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m. Calvin University (347) is in second place and followed by Trine University (351), Albion College (365) and Olivet College (365).

Cheney (Mason, Michigan / Mason HS) recorded a 12-over-par 84 and is in third place among the 37-golfer field.

Calvin's Chandler Sjoerdsma fired a first-place 79 to finish four strokes ahead of Olivet's Rylee Honsowitz.

Junior Abby Fansler (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer) and freshman Sara Muir (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) are tied for fifth after posting 86s.

Freshman Caydee Constant (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) is tied for 10th after shooting an 88.

The Flying Dutch also received:

90 from junior Abby Derocher (Farmington, Michigan / Farmington North);
92s from freshman Sammi Campbell (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and sophomore Sarah Owens (Charlotte, Michigan / Charlotte);
95 from sophomore Jordan Winters (New Carlisle, Indiana / New Prairie);
and 98 from freshman Hannah Finch (Dexter, Michigan / Dexter).
