Women's Soccer Rolls Past Illinois Wesleyan

The Hope College women's soccer team applied pressure to start the game and kept its foot on the gas for the full 90 minutes.

The Flying Dutch scored twice in the first half on Wednesday to grab a 5-0 victory over Illinois Wesleyan University at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.

Hope remained undefeated on the season and improved to 2-0-2 overall.

Just before the 20th minute, the Flying Dutch seized the lead on a goal from sophomore Liz Bellinger (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston HS).

The first of the season for the forward came after a beautiful setup from sophomore Ainsley Harris (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian).

Harris sent the ball up to where Bellinger could beat the Titan defender for a shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

Harris put in a goal of her own before the first half finished, flying past the Illinois Wesleyan defender and outworking the netminder to give Hope a 2-0 lead.

It was the second of the season for Harris.

The Flying Dutch showed the changing of the halves did not waiver their mojo. The Orange and Blue went up by three 49 seconds into the second half as Bellinger put in her second goal of the game after a mishandling of the ball by the Titan goaltender.

The fourth goal came in the 56th minute on an own goal after a free kick from senior Jenna Mustapha (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) just inside midfield. An Illinois Wesleyan defender inadvertently headed the ball into her own net.

Sophomore Claudia Folkert (Ada, Michigan / Forest Hills Central) finished out the scoring for the Flying Dutch as she sent in a picture-perfect header from a Mustapha corner kick.

The Flying Dutch outshot Illinois Wesleyan 22-3.

Freshman goalie Clara Feenstra (Hudsonville, Michigan / Hudsonville) earned her second collegiate victory in orange and blue by stopping all three shots.

Hope heads to take on Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 16, at noon.
