The Hope College women's golf team shot a team score of 351 and finished sixth at the first MIAA event of the season on Thursday.
Senior Abby Fansler (Muskegon, Michigan / Reeths-Puffer HS) shot a 12-over-par 84 at Cascades Golf Course in Jackson to lead the Flying Dutch.
The MIAA champion will be determined by a new format this year. There are four 18-hole rounds this fall and two 18-hole rounds in the spring. The lowest cumulative total after 108 holes received the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
Saint Mary's College (Ind.) topped the field on Tuesday with a team score of 326. The Belles finished seven strokes ahead of runner-up Adrian College.
Julia Lizak of Saint Mary's was the tournament medalist at 5-over.
Freshman Rachael Jones (Grove City, Ohio / Grove City) carded an 87 for Hope.
Freshman Jaiden Winters (New Carlisle, Indiana / New Prairie) chipped in an 89.
Sophomore Sara Muir (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) shot a 91.
The Flying Dutch also received 94s from sophomore Caydee Constant (Grand Haven, Michigan / Grand Haven) and freshman Allyson Zuidema (Northville, Michigan / Northville).
Hope returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. at Clearbrook Golf Course in Saugatuck.
The Flying Dutch host Calvin University in a match-play event honoring Joan Stafford, the late wife of Hope head coach Greg Stafford.
