The Hope College men's soccer team took down its third opponent in just five days and with a third shutout.
The Flying Dutchmen defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.), 1-0, on Saturday at Van Andel Soccer Stadium behind a first-half goal from junior Thomas De Vries.
The Orange and Blue are now 4-1-2 on the season.
Hope did not waiver on its third game of the week, let alone one day after taking down the reigning national champions, the University of Chicago, on Friday night at home.
"This was the week we had on the calendar where we said that it's going to be a tough week for a multitude of reasons, and I'm so proud of the resolve the guys showed," said head coach David Blahnik. "We've needed to put a streak together, and we haven't had a schedule that's easy to do that."
Just past the 24-minute mark, freshman Josh Weigel (Naperville, Illinois / Naperville Central HS) settled the ball in the box after a failed Rose-Hulman clearing attempt, then slightly touched the ball to De Vries.
De Vries, the junior from Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian), spun and sharply fired the ball past the visiting goalkeeper in the top left of the net.
Junior goaltender Daniel Hesselbein (Barrington, Illinois / Barrington Community) earned his third shutout of the week — and fifth shutout this season — with help from the defenders in front of him.
"The defense has been our staple and the most consistent part of our team this year," Blahnik said. "We have total confidence in not only our starters but our depth on defense."
Hope finishes its four-game home-stand on Wednesday, Sept. 20. The Flying Dutchmen host Eureka College at Van Andel Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
Eureka is coached by Ryan Woodside '19, a four-year midfielder and former assistant coach for the Flying Dutchmen.
